    Golfnewslinks Reporter;

    031st, August, 2021;

    The Continent of Europe has defeated Great Britain and Ireland 16½-8½ to win the Jacques Léglise Trophy at Falsterbo Golf Club in Sweden.

    Leading GB&I 6½-5½ after the first day of play, the Continent of Europe strengthened its position by winning three and halving one of the four morning foursomes matches to provide the hosts with a four-point advantage at 10-6 ahead of this afternoon’s singles matches.

    According  to latest press release  by  The R&A ,Communications, Joachim Fourquet’s side then picked up six and a half points of the nine available in the afternoon singles to seal their second win on the bounce in the boys’ international match after triumphing 15½-9½ at Aldeburgh in 2019, the last time it was played.

    In the morning’s foursomes, Oiha Guillamoundeguy and Riccardo Fantinelli set the tone with a 3&2 win against the Scottish pairing of Cameron Adam and Ruben Lindsay, while Italian duo Marco Florioli and Flavio Michetti were in impressive form on their way to a 4&3 success against Archie Finnie and Joshua Hill.

    Daniel Svard and Tim Wiedemeyer picked up a third point for the Continent of Europe after beating Daniel Bullen and Harley Smith 2&1, but GB&I salvaged a halve from the session after Jack Bigham and Josh Hill shared the spoils with German double act Tiger Christensen and Yannick Malik.

    Christensen kicked off the afternoon singles in style for the Continent of Europe with a thumping 7&6 defeat of Boys’ Amateur champion Bigham to make it 11-6. Fantinelli, runner-up to the English international at Royal Cinque Ports earlier this month, edged his side closer to victory by comfortably beating Lindsay 3&2 to claim another point.

    Michetti’s comprehensive 5&4 win over Connor Graham proved to be the clincher for the Continent of Europe, with the hosts moving into an unassailable 13-6 lead to ensure it keeps hold of the trophy won in England two years ago.

    Smith pulled a point back for GB&I shortly after with a narrow one hole win over Malik, but Guillamoundeguy restored the seven-point cushion after beating Josh Hill by the same scoreline to make it 14-7.

    GB&I playing Captain Adam managed to win a point in his match against Svard, only for Wiedemeyer to return a 2&1 victory against his compatriot Archie Finnie.

    Jaime Montojo and Joshua Hill’s tie finished all-square, which left Marco Florioli to round off a very successful two days for the Continent of Europe with a 2&1 win over Bullen, leaving the final score 16½-8½.

    The victory marks the 14th time that the Continent of Europe has won the Jacques Léglise Trophy since the boys’ international match between the two teams was rejuvenated in 1977.

    Key Quotes;

    Joachim Fourquet, non-playing captain, Continent of Europe:

    “I feel very proud and happy. I think the morning foursomes were key and we played really well. To win the early matches this afternoon was also important. My players were in very good form and we gelled well as a team. They know how to play golf. To win the trophy for a second time running is great and captaining the Continent of Europe is one of the most special things to do.”

    Cameron Adam, playing captain, Great Britain and Ireland:

    “The foursomes were the difference today and to take one half point isn’t good enough. You put yourself on the back foot and it’s difficult to come back from there. We showed a lot of courage to win some points in the singles and put a performance in. I’m proud of the team and there were some good

    Individual performances. The boys really enjoyed it despite the result. There was good golf out there and we have a young team. I think this team will be back fighting again for the trophy next year.”

    The 2022 Jacques Léglise Trophy will be played at Blairgowrie in Scotland from 26-27 August when it will be held alongside the Junior Vagliano Trophy at the Perthshire venue.

    The Jacques Léglise Trophy Match is played annually between boys representing Great Britain and Ireland and the Continent of Europe.

    The match was inaugurated in 1958 but suspended in 1966.

    It was rejuvenated in 1977 when the Jacques Léglise Trophy was presented by Jean-Louis Dupont of Golf de Chantilly in memory of Jacques Léglise, a past French champion and captain who had served as President of the French Golf Federation and of the European Golf Association. Initially played as a one-day match, it became a two-day match in 1996.

    The GB&I team is selected by The R&A and the Continent of Europe side by the European Golf Association.

    The R&A group of companies was formed in 2004 to take on The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews’ responsibilities for governing the Rules of Golf, staging The Open, golf’s original championship, and developing the sport.

    The World Golf Museum in St Andrews is part of the R&A group.

    Together The R&A and the USGA govern the sport of golf worldwide, operating in separate jurisdictions with a commitment to a single code for the Rules of Golf, Rules of Amateur Status and Equipment Standards.

    The R&A, through R&A Rules Ltd, governs the sport worldwide, outside of the United States and Mexico, on behalf of over 36 million golfers in 143 countries and with the consent of 158 organizations from amateur and professional golf.

    The R&A has responsibility for running a series of world class amateur events and international matches in women’s and girls’ as well as men’s and boys’ golf.

    The R&A stages the AIG Women’s Open and works with the European Tour to stage the Senior Open presented by Rolex.

    The R&A is committed to investing £200 million over ten years in developing golf and supports the growth of the sport internationally, including the development and management of sustainable golf facilities.

    Maarufu Mohamed, Golfnewslinks;

    013th, August, 2021;

    An 18-year-old Rose Zhang of the United States of America has won the Mark H McCormack Medal as the leading female player in the 2021 World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR).

    According to media release by R&A Corporate Communications from St Andrews, Scotland and Liberty Corner, NJ, USA, this is her second straight McCormack Medal, having also received the honor last October.

    Zhang’s incredible run of golf continued this year, earning her second USGA title in as many years at the US Girls’ Junior Championship in July.

    Since receiving the McCormack Medal last October, Zhang competed in three LPGA major championships, making the cut in two, the 2020 US Women’s open in December and the 2021 Amundi Evian Championship last month.

    She also finished third at the 2021 Augusta National Women’s Amateur and earned a runner-up finish in the LPGA Symetra Tour’s Carlisle Arizona Women’s Golf Classic.

    She has spent 47 straight weeks as the No. 1 player in the world.

    “To receive any award with the USGA and The R&A’s names on it is incredible, so to have it happen a second time is both rewarding and humbling. The work I’ve put into my game over the past few years has truly been paying off, and I am so grateful to all who have supported me along the way. I look forward to continuing to reach new heights as I take my game to the collegiate level,” said Zhang.

    Zhang, who will compete at the 2021 AIG Women’s Open and for the USA Team in the Curtis Cup Match in Wales later this month, will begin her freshman season at Stanford University in the fall.

    One of the most decorated junior golfers of all time, she is a two-time winner of the Rolex Tournament of Champions, won the 2020 Rolex Girls Junior Championship and the 2020 Ping Invitational, and is a two-time AJGA Player of the Year.

    The R&A and the USGA jointly award the McCormack Medal annually.

    It is named after Mark H McCormack, who founded sports marketing company IMG and was a great supporter of amateur golf.

    Professor Steve Otto, Chief Technology Officer at The R&A, said, “Rose has demonstrated a remarkable level of consistency in her results achieved over the last two years, which has led to her excelling as the world’s leading women’s amateur golfer for a second successive year. Her performances show that she is a worthy recipient of the McCormack Medal and we would like to congratulate her on this fantastic achievement. On behalf of our entire organization, I’d like to congratulate Rose on this incredible achievement,” said John Bodenhamer, USGA senior managing director, Championships. Her play over the last two years has put her in a league of her own, and she has shown she is not only a champion on the course, but off it as well. We cannot wait to continue to watch her career grow for years to come.”

    The World Amateur Golf Ranking, which is supported by Rolex, was established in 2007 when the men’s ranking was launched.

    The men’s ranking encompasses nearly 2,900 counting events, ranking 7,309 players from 117 countries.

    The women’s ranking was launched in 2011 and has a calendar of around 1,900 counting events with more than 3,830 ranked players from 88 countries.

    The World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) which comprises a women’s ranking and a men’s ranking for elite amateur players, is offered by The R&A and the USGA as a global service to golf.

    Through incorporation and assessment worldwide of both amateur and professional events, WAGR encourages the international development of the competitive game.

    The ranking endeavors to be the most comprehensive and accurate ranking in golf by effectively comparing players from around the world who may never directly compete against one another.

    It is available to national federations and organizers of amateur and professional events and tours as a criterion for tournament field selection and for purposes of exemptions, national team selection, and orders of merit.

    The award is named after Mark H McCormack, the late founder of sports marketing company IMG and an avid supporter of amateur golf.

    The Mark H McCormack Medal is awarded to the player ranked number one in the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) after the US Women’s Amateur Championship or the European Ladies’ Amateur Championship, whichever concludes last.

    Established in 2007, the same award goes to the player leading the men’s ranking after the European Amateur Championship or US Amateur Championship, whichever concludes last.

    The Previous Winners are;

    Men- 2020 Takumi Kanaya (JAP), 2019 Cole Hammer (USA), 2018 Braden Thornberry (USA), 2017 Joaquin Niemann (Chile), 2016 Maverick McNealy (USA), 2015 Jon Rahm (ESP), 2014 Oliver Schniederjans (USA), 2013 Matthew Fitzpatrick (ENG), 2012 Chris Williams (USA), 2011 Patrick Cantlay (USA), 2010 Peter Uihlein (USA), 2009 Nick Taylor (CAN), 2008 Danny Lee (NZL), 2007 Colt Knost (USA).
